Deeds for the grave of the woman who may have inspired the Beatles song go on sale at an auction next month, as reported by the Guardian this morning.
It's expected to be sold alongside the deeds for a gravestone which bears the name "Eleanor Rigby" in Liverpool, supposedly in a churchyard where John Lennon and Paul met at a party back in 1957.
In an extraordinary but perfectly legal arrangement, the individual who may buy the deeds to the grave of Eleanor Rigby which lie in a Liverpool graveyard will have a right to burial in the grave.
A certificate of purchase and a receipt for the grave space will be sold in a lot with a miniature bible, dated 1899 and with the name Eleanor Rigby written inside. Those items are estimated to sell for between 2,000 and 4,000 pounds, or between about $2,600 and $5,200 U.S.
Paul Fairweather, from auctioneer Omega, told the BBC it was an "incredible coincidence" for both lots to come up for sale at the same time. The cemetery has subsequently become a pilgrimage site for Beatles fans.
THE haunting tale of Eleanor Rigby stands out among The Beatles' repertoire as a departure from the band's early, jolly love songs.
It was handwritten by Beatles producer George Martin, and signed by Paul, as he wrote the lyrics to the song, which had overriding themes of loneliness.
It also featured in The Beatles' film of the same name in 1969.
The Rigby part allegedly came from a shop in Bristol - Rigby & Evens Ltd, Wine & Spirit Shippers - that McCartney spotted while watching then-girlfriend Jane Asher perform in The Happiest Days Of Your Life.
The real Eleanor Rigby lived with her grandparents until her death on October 10, 1939 at the age of 44.
Whoever buys the space in her grave will be granted exclusive right of burial for 99 years. The last person to be buried in Eleanor Rigby's family grave was laid to rest in 1949, 68 years ago. It was recorded at the Abbey Road Studio in London as noted on the auction item which also revealed details of the instrumental - i.e. that it includes four violins, two violas and two cellos.
