The Hitman's Bodyguard Dominates Weekend Box Office

A scene from

The No. 1 movie over the weekend was The Hitman's Bodyguard which collected a stout US$21.6 million.

If HITMAN went for laughs and thrills, the week's other starry opening LOGAN LUCKY sank like a stone.

Audiences gave the R-rated pic a B+ CinemaScore. It was down 38% for the weekend, but still has some gas left in the tank since there is really no competition worth considering in the coming weeks. The action/comedy took in $21.6 million in its first weekend of release, which was well ahead of second-place finisher Annabelle: Creation's $15.5 million. Cume for the new chapter is $64M going to the vicinity of $90M. ANNABELLE CREATION, the old fashioned classic horror movie that is number 2 in this weekend's box-office, has a "star" that can't renegotiate a better fee for more sequels - she's the series' scary looking possessed doll. These are enormous returns for low cost thrillers.

Third place again results in a steep drop as the new film from once-retired auteur Steven Soderbergh, Logan Lucky, earned $8.1 million. The movie's $3 million haul is good for a $4,359 per theater average. Film critics were very impressed, but that did not translate into any consumer heat. This weekend it looks to gross $3 million from 694 locations, raising its total cume past $4.1 million.

Hackers can take control of smashed Android phones using replacement screens
Placing this device on the motherboard means that it will not be affected by malicious component replacement. The compromised device could also be used to take a photo of the user and send it to the attacker via email.

You can view this weekend's full box office results (via Box Office Mojo) below. It was the first time Soderbergh has been able to have that power. Studios put together an awfully weak slate for August this year and exhibitors are now witnessing a lack of long lines.

Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" still holds a spot on the top five list as it brought in $6.7 million on its fifth weekend.

A pair of animated comedies kept kids busy this weekend. It blew away all titles with an estimated $US21 million opening, according to The Wrap. Sony's The Emoji Movie slipped 33% to an estimated $4.4M putting the total at $71.8M.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is close to passing $315 million domestically while Girls Trip passed $100 million domestically after 31 days. The sum has risen to $314M here and $724.8M worldwide. Lionsgate's action comedy debuted to a better-than-expected $21.6 million from 3,377 theaters to easily win the weekend, although it couldn't do anything to stop overall summer revenue from continuing to tumble amid a awful August. It has now grossed more than 2017's next two biggest comedies - Baywatch and Snatched - combined. The Dark Tower managed just $3.7 million in its third week of release and has earned a cumulative total of $41.6 million, which must be just a little disappointing.
