V&A Museum apologises after telling breastfeeding mother to 'cover up'

The museum's director, Tristram Hunt, who resigned as Labour MP earlier this year to take up the position, also apologised personally.

"Women are welcome to breastfeed in the museum and we have quiet spaces for those who prefer privacy", the spokesperson said.

NPR reports on a breastfeeding mother who was asked by a staffer at London's Victoria and Albert Museum to cover up while trying to feed her 1-year-old in a museum courtyard over the weekend.

Especially considering all of the bare breasts on display throughout the museum, which she pointed out in her next few snarky tweets. "All these naked breasts are putting people off their food", she captioned another shot of museum-goers calmly enjoying a snack while surrounded by sculptures of nude women.

"On the upside, I had a lovely day at @V_and_a exploring depictions of breasts thru the ages and making lovely mammaries".

She wrote: "Reason it's important".

"Martin will be remembered as a man of prodigious energy; a director with a global reputation both within the museum world and beyond; a committed Europhile and cultural ambassador with a philosophical turn of mind, as well as a devoted husband and father".

She shared an image holding her young son standing next to a statue of a woman breastfeeding to highlight the absurdity of the request. Joyce said she appreciated the apology and that the museum's response "show that attitudes are on the most part positive".

After her own unpleasant experience, Joyce has also supported the RCPCH's suggestions.
