Ferguson turned down Ribery transfer at Man Utd, claims Campbell

Behind the smile the revelations come from the latest batch of published diaries by Alastair Campbell

FRANCK RIBERY did not not join Manchester United in 2006 because Sir Alex Ferguson didn't consider the France worldwide top drawer.

Spin doctor Campbell knew Ferguson well, the Manchester United manager having come out as a strong supporter of Tony Blair's administration.

Ferguson personally scouted Ribery back in February 2006 during the France international's time at Marseille.

Ribery was the star at Marseille.

In a report by the Times, Campbell spoke about his friend Sir Alex Ferguson in great detail and his relationship with the Dutch striker.
