How Tesla Is Helping Florida Drivers Escape Hurricane Irma

How Tesla Is Helping Florida Drivers Escape Hurricane Irma

There are reports of traffic jams and gas stations running out gas. Some drivers only buy 60 or 70 kilowatt hours of battery capacity, but a software change will give them access to 75 kilowatt hours of battery life until Saturday.

Tesla actually has a very robust supercharger network in the state of Florida, but numerous superchargers were busy as owners attempted to head north for evacuation.

According to an email Tesla sent to its customers, the company has sent the update to drivers across Florida, and will allow them to use the increased capacity until September 16.

After owners reported to having longer ranges than usual in their cars, a Tesla representative confirmed to green energy news site Electrek that this was a temporary, emergency measure put in place to aid those in Irma's path, the 400-mile-wide hurricane that experts say could be zeroing in on Tampa.

Can an ocean disappear? Hurricane Irma, mystery solved
He also warned that the water will come back soon - and residents should be cautious, since the water's return may be powerful. Meteorologists explain the incredible pressure from Hurricane Irma is pulling the water into the storm's center.

Tesla offers 60 model owners the opportunity to unlock the additional 15-kWh of juice by paying several thousand dollars for an over-the-air upgrade. Faced with an order to leave, one Tesla owner contacted the company, saying that they needed an additional 30 miles of range to get out of the mandatory evacuation zone they were in.

Considering the 15 kWh (30 to 40 additional miles) could also be useful to other owners affected by Irma, Tesla made a decision to also temporarily unlock other vehicles with the same software-lock battery packs in the region.

Otherwise, the other Superchargers are reportedly online and accessible on the way north. Stay safe out there everyone.
