Time Warner Cable Customer Records Leaked in Data Breach

The information included email addresses, user names, financial transactions (though there's no indication of credit card data) and billing addresses.

Researchers said they discovered the data repositories during their investigation into the unrelated World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) data leak.

The breach was eventually linked to BroadSoft Inc, a communications company, whose unit developed the MyTWC app. Kromtech said the exposed S3 buckets contained a "massive amount of sensitive information and researchers estimate it would take weeks to fully sort through all of the data".

The breach is believed to have happened from BroadSoft's workers in Bengaluru, India.

"In this case, engineers accidentally leaked not only customer and partner data but also internal credentials that criminals could have easily used to monitor or access the company's network and infrastructure".

Charter Communications acknowledged Friday that it discovered a data breach that made the private information of some of its customers available to outsiders.

The S3 buckets were accidentally configured to allow public access, potentially allowing anyone with the URL to access and download the sensitive data. There were also some internal company records like credentials for external systems, internal emails, and SQL database dumps.

Gas prices begin surge in wake of Harvey
U.S gasoline prices surged anew after Colonial pipeline COLPI.UL, which operates the biggest USA fuel transporter system. If you operate refineries not impacted by the Gulf, you are able to sell that gasoline for more".

Furthermore, there is nothing to suggest that Charter systems were affected.

According to Time Warner Cable parent Charter Communications, "There is some nonfinancial information of TWC customers, especially for those who used the MyTWC app, which may be visible to external individuals".

"Upon discovery, the information was removed immediately by the vendor, and we are now investigating this incident with them", it said in a statement to Gizmodo.

Meanwhile, Uber Technologies Inc has agreed to two decades of audits after USA regulators found the ride-services company failed to protect the personal information of drivers and passengers and deceived the public about efforts to prevent snooping by its employees.

Charter said it recommends that customers who have used the MyTWC app change their usernames and passwords. "We apologize for the frustration and anxiety this causes, and will communicate directly to customers if their information was involved in this incident".

It's unclear how many customers were affected by the breach.

"The two repositories contained thousands and thousands [of] records and reports for a number of Broadsoft clients, with Time Warner Cable (TWC) appearing to be the most prominent", Kromtech's Bob Diachenko wrote in a blog.
