Trump pledges $1 million for hurricane relief, White House says

Meanwhile, despite threats from Trump that he would shut down the government if his U.S. -Mexico border wall is not paid for, lawmakers and aides say the White House has eased off that threat and any fight over the border wall will be delayed until later in the year.

The White House has said that it would make multiple requests for aid from Congress to fund the Harvey recovery effort.

US President Donald Trump has prepared a request to Congress for an initial $5.9 billion in aid, an administration official said.

The House is likely to pass the Harvey aid as a stand-alone bill, but GOP leaders are signaling that the Senate may add the debt increase to it. Much larger future installments will be required but the initial package, to replenish Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster coffers through September 30, shouldn't be controversial.

Trump, who visited Texas on Tuesday, is planning a return trip this weekend with first lady Melania Trump. Trump was in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Wednesday to meet officials.

He has also pledged $1 million in personal funds for disaster recovery.

Still, he says people living in the country illegally should not expect long-term federal assistance reserved for citizens.

Turner Announces Mandatory Evacuation for Parts of West Houston
The area under order is for the area west of Gessner, east of Highway 6, south of the I-10 freeway, and north of Briar Forest. Starting Sunday morning, crews will start going house-to-house in that area to turn off power to any homes that are inundated.

The White House is expected to ask Congress for around US$5.9 billion (S$8 billion) in emergency aid in the wake of mega storm Harvey, which left swathes of Texas and Louisiana inundated, a USA government official told AFP.

"I think the resilience of the people of Texas has been inspiring".

Trump has been criticized in the past for giving far less of his income to charitable causes than many other multi-billionaires.

The storm dumped an estimated 27 trillion gallons of rain over Texas and Louisiana over six days, said Ryan Maue, of the weather analytics company WeatherBell.

White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert speaks during the daily press briefing, Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, in Washington.

A catchall domestic spending bill facing a House vote next week includes, for now, an $876 million cut from FEMA disaster accounts that helps balance the cost of Trump's $1.6 billion request for the U.S. -Mexico border wall.
