The BMW X2 has been unveiled as the brand's sportiest small crossover yet - created to attract more younger buyers than the other six models already in the X range. Not familiar with what the X2 is? That's reflected in the styling as well, as the X2 sports a more dynamic appearance - the automaker even goes as far as saying the profile combines the rugged look of a BMW X model with the sporting grace of a coupe. As you'd expect from the X2's cunning name, the new auto slots between the X1 and X3 in the lineup, though it is in fact shorter than the X1 by around 60mm, and it sits almost 60mm lower while riding on the same wheelbase. Assuming a similar difference for the already announced, but not yet officially introduced entry-level model X2 sDrive18i, a basic price of about 34,250 euros for the BMW X2 F39 will be expected.
The X2 does match its X1 sister in the 2670mm wheelbase - the two cars share the same platform used under the 2 Series Active Tourer and are being built alongside each other at Regensburg in Germany. The X2's short overhangs, low roofline and slim windows give it a more muscular look than the more practical X1. The X2 xDrive28i can reach 60 miles per hour 6.3 seconds.
In the USA the X2 will initially only be offered with BMW's 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, although a diesel engine is available in other markets.
Both diesel versions get the xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with torque converter as standard, while the gasoline model is front-wheel-drive and features the seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission. Wheel sizes will start at 17-inches, but M Sport and M Sport X models will have 19- or 20-inch units giving you an idea of the on-road bent BMW has instilled in the X2.
Inside the 2018 BMW X2 will offer BMW's latest infotainment systems with either a 6.5-inch or 8.8-inch Touch Control Display if a navigation system is selected.
Arriving in European markets in March 2018, the all-new BMW X2 targets young audiences, particularly customers who live in urban areas. To that end, the driver (and passenger) are offered three different ways of interacting with the thing, via the iDrive controller, cost optional voice control or cost optional touchscreen Control Display (fingers crossed touchscreen will be standard in Australia).
