The Indigo Partners deal is the single largest order by number of aircraft that any individual plane maker has received.
Franke, 80, flew to the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday and was due to sign at the Dubai Airshow, marking one of the industry's biggest deals by volume and the most planes sold by Airbus in one batch, two people familiar with the matter said.
Since then, he has overseen the sale of jets worth $1.7 trillion at list prices and Airbus's market share has risen from 18 percent to be roughly evenly split with arch-rival Boeing.
Indigo Partners' four portfolio airlines, Hungarian carrier Wizz Air, US-based Frontier, Chile's JetSmart and Mexico's Volaris, have signed a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of 430 aircraft, as the crop of low-priced airlines eye greater expansion.
"Just to clarify: This is not an A380 press conference", joked John Leahy, Airbus' sales chief, as the start of the announcement.
The order includes A320neos and A321neos, the source said. I've known Mr. Leahy for 25 years.
It is managed by William Franke, a pioneer of the cheap tickets and high fees airline business model that has spread overseas and is growing in the US.
Airbus has struck its biggest single deal with an order for 430 aircraft worth $49.5bn at list prices from a USA owner of a string of budget airlines. IndiGo and Indigo Partners are separate firms with separate management.
Franke was previously the chairman and chief executive of America West, which was acquired by U.S. Airways in 2005. Reports circulated before the air show that a major A380 sale would be coming.
Airbus said the deal would be finalised before the end of this year.
Emirates now relies exclusively on the Airbus 380 and the Boeing 777 for its flights, making it the largest operator of both. It has 165 777s in its fleet and took possession of its 100th A380 earlier this month.
Separately, the immediate prospect of a much-discussed deal to keep the A380 in production beyond the end of the decade remained in suspense with Emirates seeking guarantees over the longevity of the program, plagued by slow orders from other carriers. It is thought that Emirates asked for last-minutes changes.
