India lose to Bangladesh, knocked out of U-19 Asia Cup

With one win and two defeats in three matches, India U-19 finished third in Group A - above hosts Malaysia. The defending champions lost to Nepal on Sunday and suffered a similar fate against Bangladesh on Tuesday to crash out of the tournament.

India, who needed to beat Bangladesh to keep their title hopes alive, reached 187 for eight in 32 overs with Salman Khan scoring 39 at the Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara.

The defeat meant that Bangladesh and Nepal, from Group A, will join Pakistan and Afghanistan, respectively, in the semi-finals.

India's batting firepower was weakened after prodigious Mumbai batsman Prithvi Shaw was pulled out from the squad ahead of the tournament. Two others - Harvik Desai (21) and Anuj Rawat (34) - wasted starts. The duo stitched 82 runs partnership to put their team in driver's seat.

After Sheikh's wicket, Ghosh continued to hammer India bowlers and stitched an unbroken 83-run stand with Mohammad Tawhid Hridoy to guide their team to the semi-finals.

Ghosh remained unbeaten on 81, while Hridoy made 48 not out.

Afghanistan trounced the United Arab Emirates by 134 runs at the Kinrara Oval to finish top of Group B on a better run-rate than Pakistan and Sri Lanka, after all three teams ended on four points.

Nepal thrashed Malaysia by eight wickets set up a semi-final against Bangladesh. Malaysia sensationally slipped from 33 without loss to 45 all out. In reply, Bangladesh U-19 were bolstered by Pinak Ghosh's 77-ball 81 not out as they cruised past India's target with eight wickets in hand and four overs to spare.
