Islanders encouraged to hand in guns to Newport police station

Surrender firearms during national campaign

During that period, those surrendering firearms will not face prosecution for the illegal possession upon surrender and can remain anonymous.

The last firearms surrender in Derbyshire was in 2014, and saw 153 shotguns, rifles and pistols handed in along with more than 9,300 rounds of ammunition and three deactivated hand grenades.

Through initiatives like this, West Mercia Police are taking illegitimate weapons off our streets and helping people to feel more secure, particularly in our rural communities where there a higher number of licensed and legitimate firearms holders.

"By participating in the surrender, people can be confident that items have been safely disposed of".

Guns and ammunition can be surrendered at police stations across the United Kingdom but anyone handing in a firearm, ammunition or any other weapon during the surrender is advised to check the opening times of your station online or call 101. "Every firearm surrendered is one less weapon that can be used to commit crime".

Each firearm handed into us is one that will not fall into the hands of criminals.

Police forces across the United Kingdom are appealing for people to hand over any unwanted guns with a two week surrender of firearms and ammunition, starting on Monday 13th November 2017.

Following a rise in recorded firearms offences across the United Kingdom in 2017, the National Police Chief's Council (NPCC) has asked all police forces in England, Scotland and Wales to take part in a national firearms surrender in November.

By surrendering your weapons now, it will prevent them falling into the hands of criminals and endangering the public.

Malaysia not a 'trade cheat', says Mustapa
Putrajaya has denied US President Donald Trump's accusation that Malaysia is a "trade cheat" responsible for the former's trade deficit.

"The surrender provides the ideal opportunity to safely dispose of these weapons and to prevent them from ending up on the streets and falling into criminals hands, which only brings destruction and devastation to our communities".

"If you know where a weapon is being kept illegally, now is your chance to surrender the gun, or tell us anonymously where it is".

People surrendering firearms will not be required to leave any information but if police suspect a weapon may have been involved in a crime, they will examine it for evidence.

"We recognise that firearms or replica weapons in the wrong hands can assist in the commission of serious offences, can increase community fears, can result in a significant drain on police resources responding to incidents, and can present a potential risk to armed officers confronting an individual in possession of a weapon they believe to be real".

This is the message from Thames Valley Police as they launch their Firearms and Ammunition Surrender this week. "Each firearm we retrieve has the potential to save a life so do the right thing and surrender your weapon". The majority of the firearms handed in during the last surrender were older items that the owner no longer needed and wanted to safely dispose of.

"Instead, the surrender gives us the opportunity to take any guns people should not have, or do not want, out of circulation and help to make County Durham and Darlington a safer place to live". To receive advice on how best to transport the weapon responsibly from home to their police station they are advised to phone 101 before travelling.

Illegal possession of a firearm can mean five years behind bars and if you are found guilty of possession with intent to supply that can lead to a life sentence.

If you know of people involved in illegal firearms call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
