NY allows veterans with PTSD to apply for medicinal marijuana

Cuomo signs bill expanding medical marijuana to PTSD patients

On Veteran's Day, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed five pieces of legislation to help NY veterans.

According to the governor's office, around 19,000 patients with PTSD in NY could benefit from the use of medical marijuana.

Members of the U.S. military suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder will now be able to acquire medical marijuana to treat their condition as part of a series of bills signed Saturday by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in honor of Veterans Day.

"Gov. Cuomo should be applauded for helping thousands of New York veterans find relief with medical marijuana", said Bob Becker, legislative director for the New York State Council of Veterans Organizations.

He is now suing the NFL and its owners alleging that they are colluding to keep him out of the league because of his stances. Talk show host Stephen Colbert and actress Gal Gadot, the star of the blockbuster movie "Wonder Woman", also made the list.

Cuomo said other potential beneficiaries besides veterans are police officers and survivors of domestic violence, crime and accidents. The governor's office estimates 19,000 patients in NY could be helped by the newly-available treatment. Bills to add PTSD to state medical marijuana programs were signed into law in Colorado, New Hampshire, and Vermont this year.

"If there are veterans that are suffering and we can make a treatment available, we want to", Cuomo said.

"Our veterans risked their lives in order to defend the ideals and principles that this nation was founded upon and it is our duty to do everything we can to support them when they return home", Governor Cuomo said.

He also approved measures to waive fees for veterans, honor them in the State Capitol and provide veterans employed by the state with paid leave for counseling and doctor's appointments.
