Philippine protesters burn Swastika-shaped effigy of Donald Trump

I GOT IT! Trump grimaced as he swapped hands with Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc while Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte waited for his other arm to connect

More than 3,900 people have been killed in a war on drugs that Mr Duterte declared when he took office past year. According to reports, over 3,000 people have been killed in this crackdown so far, with human rights agencies citing grave violations.

When White House reporters traveling with Trump asked whether the issue of human rights had come up at a meeting between the two presidents Monday, both Trump and Duterte declined to respond.

Ms Ardern will meet Rodrigo Duterte later this evening after the East Asia Summit finishes in Manila.

We are your ally.

US President Donald Trump congratulated the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for the liberation of Marawi City from local armed groups that pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS). "We are an important ally", Duterte told Trump at the beginning of their talks, according to reporters allowed in to the meeting room. This has been very successful.

Demonstrators burned American flags and a swastika-shaped effigy of Mr Trump who was in Manila for an Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) conference. "This is the bilateral meeting".

But rather than rebuke Duterte's drug war killings, Trump praised him, according to a leaked transcript of a phone call between the two men earlier this year.

While a Philippines government spokesman said that human rights issue was not raised during the leaders' meeting, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said that the topic was mentioned briefly.

The protesters say they are concerned the leaders are not giving human rights enough attention and will not be addressing poverty in the region as they would like to see it.
