The old paper £10 note featuring Charles Darwin will expire shortly before midnight on March 1, 2018, the Bank of England has announced.

Its days have been numbered since the new polymer tenner, depicting author Jane Austen, entered circulation in September.

The new version is two and a half times stronger than its paper counterpart (and is better at surviving the washing machine).

The new tenner is the first Bank of England note with a tactile feature to help blind and partially-sighted users.

Britons in possession of the old note will need to spend it or deposit it before that date as it ceases to be legal tender from 2 March.

SBUT to bid for 3 of Dawood's properties in Bhendi Bazaar
Damarwala building was home to Dawood Ibrahim and his family members in late eighties. The Reserve price kept for the present auction was Rs 1,23,43,000.

Around 55 per cent of the £10 notes now in circulation are the newer version pictured above, while the remaining 359 million are made of paper.

The Bank added that the public can continue to use the old notes as normal as most paper £10 notes will be automatically removed from circulation.

Retailers, banks and other institutions can refuse to accept the old-style notes beyond the deadline, although it will still be possible for shoppers to exchange them for the new £10 note featuring Jane Austen at the Bank of England.

It has persevered with the material despite complaints from religious and vegan groups that the animal fat tallow is used in the production process.

The £5 note has already been completely switched over to the new version, with the old style being taken out of circulation in May.
