Hawaii authorities are searching for Saito, who was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity, after he escaped from Hawaii State Hospital in Honolulu on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, and flew to Maui.
Randall Toshio Saito, 59, escaped from the hospital in Kaneohe on Sunday and shortly thereafter boarded a plane and traveled to Maui, said Lt. Gregg Okamoto, police spokesman.
Maui Now reached out to police for an update this morning and were informed that authorities are "actively looking" for Saito, and continue to "encourage the public to call with any information". The FBI provides general assistance to local law enforcement if a subject crosses state or global lines. Sources told Hawaii News Now that Saito caught a Hawaiian Airlines flight to Silicon Valley, and flight logs at Mineta San Jose International Airport show Saito landed at the airport Sunday.
"His current whereabouts are unknown", Okamoto said.
Police have shared photos of Saito, who was last seen in a red jacket, trousers and a buttoned aloha shirt.
"He is a very risky individual", said Wayne Tashima, a Honolulu prosecutor who argued in 2015 against Saito receiving passes to leave the hospital grounds without an escort.
Taking your time over meals cuts danger of heart disease
Fast eaters were nearly twice as likely to develop metabolic syndrome compared with their normal eating counterparts. The study authors conclude, "Eating speed was associated with obesity and future prevalence of metabolic syndrome".
Tashima warned people not to approach Saito, saying there's a concern he could commit the same "very heinous and violent offense" again. The woman, selected at random, was shot in the face with a pellet gun and repeatedly stabbed.
Saito was acquitted of the murder by reason of insanity. A second attempt by defense attorneys to win Saito's release in 2000 was also blocked.
He filed for a conditional release in 1993 but was denied after the court said he still had an attraction to necrophilia and suffered from sadistic, sexual urges that made him a danger to the community.
The state Health Department reported Saito's escape to authorities around 8 p.m. when he failed to check back in after an unescorted leave from the facility.
"Randall Saito is a very disturbed, mentally ill individual", said deputy prosecutor Jeff Albert at the time, according to television station KHON in Honolulu.
The department "takes all escapes seriously and has safeguards in place to minimize the chances of these from occurring", according to a statement from the Health Department.
