Wizz Air orders 146 A320neo Family jets

Airlines eye Boeing deals at Dubai Airshow

Airbus SE announced the biggest commercial-plane deal in its history, securing an order valued at almost US$50 billion for 430 planes from its single-aisle A320neo line and dramatically overshadowing the deals won by Boeing Co.

"Indigo Partners have been a tremendous customer and supporter of the Airbus single-aisle fleet for many years", said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers, Airbus Commercial Aircraft.

The last sizeable order for Airbus was in July, when the plane-maker signed a $23bn deal to sell 100 A320 aircraft to state-owned China Aviation Supplies Holding Company, to allocate to Chinese airlines.

The deal represents the largest single order for Airbus planes by volume and comprises 273 A320neos and 157 A321neos, worth a combined $49.5 billion at list prices.

The pact with United States investor Indigo Partners gives Airbus the upper hand at the Dubai Air Show, where it has been trailing its USA rival in orders.

Airbus and Boeing went into the air show with 288 and 605 net orders, respectively.

Airbus said the deal would be finalised before the end of this year. It agreed buy 150 Boeing 777X planes and 50 A380s, which were worth a total of $99 billion at list prices.

Indigo Partners is a U.S. investment firm founded by Bill Franke that specialises in the lease of planes to low-priced airlines.

Leahy, a smooth-talking New Yorker, became a famous thorn in the side of Boeing and other Airbus rivals during his more than 20 years in the job.
