Woman must pay Katy Perry for interfering with convent sale

It awarded $1.57 million to Perry and $3.47 million to the archdiocese to cover the costs of lawyers

A businesswoman has been ordered to pay Katy Perry $1.57 million (£1.18m) after a jury decided she intentionally interfered with the sale of a former Los Angeles convent. Hollister has been told she must cover these costs, with $3.47m (£2.62m) owed to the archdiocese and $1.57m owed to Perry.

If you didn't get the joke then, here's the explanation: Since 2015, Perry has been locked in a legal battle with a group of nuns in Los Angeles.

A group of nuns who used to live in the convent with the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary opposed the sale and tried instead to sell the property to another buyer, Dana Hollister.

An after-hours message left with Hollister's attorneys seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Hollister's lawyer Michael Geibelson told the court his client thought she had a correct and legal contract, and had not meant to cause either party harm.

They insisted they could sell the former convent to a restaurant owner called Dana Hollister.

The church and Perry could win even more at a second phase of the trial starting on December 1 that will consider punitive damages.

A Los Angeles jury decided Friday after a day of deliberation that Hollister intentionally interfered with the sale to Perry, including by falsely claiming the title to the property. Only five sisters, who are in their 70s and 80s, remain, and their order has bickered with the archbishop for years on various issues. The nuns watched the "Roar" singer's music videos and met with her, but that only hardened their opposition to her turning their convent into her home.
