Around the NHL: Simmonds leads Flyers as they double up Oilers

Philadelphia Flyers' Valtteri Filppula and Edmonton Oilers' Jesse Puljujarvi battle in the corner during second period NHL action in Edmonton Alta. on Wednesday

The Philadelphia Flyers hope it's the start of an impressive turnaround. They certainly weren't entertaining, but they were effective, winning two in row.

The Philadelphia Flyers haven't won three straight games since March 28 - April 1, and they're still a brutal team on the road despite winning in Edmonton and Calgary.

Jordan Weal, Dale Weise and Michael Raffl also scored for the Flyers (10-11-7), who won consecutive games for only the second time this season, coming on the heels of a 10-game losing skid. Claude Giroux added two assists, and Brian Elliott made 24 saves.

Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got the goals for the Oilers (11-15-2).

Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead on a soft goal with five minutes left in the second period when Weise sent a shot through goalie Laurent Brossoit's legs. Against the Flyers, he has 22 assists and 25 points in 20 career games.

"That's what he does - he builds up that speed and catches you flat-footed", Elliott said.

"Yeah, we talked about that. These aren't our fans out here, we don't have to entertain them", he said. "We've just got to come away with the two points". "I think, when you lose 10 in a row, you kind of get that hunger back - not that we didn't have it at the beginning of the year, but I think we've got that urgency in our game now where we just hate to lose and it really bothers every guy in here".

Second Period_1, Edmonton, Draisaitl 8 (McDavid), 3:41 (sh). He and defensive partner Andrew MacDonald helped contain superstar Connor McDavid (one shot).

The Canucks have had a lot of success over the last three weeks on the power play. Weal was on the doorstep to tip home a pass from Sean Couturier at 8:53 of the middle period.

NOTES: Oilers defenseman Adam Larsson remained out with an injury. "I thought we had some good looks in the third, but couldn't capitalize".

Weal had a different perspective on the goal.

The film also stars Judith Roberts , John Doman , Alex Manette , Dante Pereira-Olsen, and Alessandro Nivola . Here's what we had to say about the film when we caught it at the BFI London Film Festival back in October.

"Our forecheck was really good tonight in the neutral zone", Weal said.

"Pretty good play by Giroux there".

"I battled hard", said Brossoit, who has given up five goals or more in four of his nine appearances this season. "Coots made a helluva play to get it to me". "Maybe that second one is eliminated", Brossoit said.

Pouliot, unwanted by the two-time Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, has earned more than a passing grade from Green - for his tape-to-tape passes among other things. "Getting contributions from everyone, it's going to be huge if we want to keep stringing some wins together".

The Oilers struck shorthanded 3:21 into the second.

Third Period_4, Philadelphia, Raffl 4 (Voracek), 4:06.

Wayne Simmonds iced it with an empty-net goal in the last minute.

Pouliot, 23, has become a mainstay with the Canucks (14-10-4) and will play a prominent role again Thursday night as they host the Philadelphia Flyers (10-11-7). The Flyers recently placed goalie Michal Neuvirth and defenseman Brandon Manning on injured reserve. Oilers G Cam Talbot, now on injured reserve, is expected to start skating later this week. Also scratched was LW Anton Slepyshev.
