How US woman funded ISIS with Bitcoin

Pakistani-American woman tried funding ISIS through bitcoin

Zoobia Shahnaz of Long Island, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of NY said today, has been charged with bank fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and three counts of money laundering.

Zoobia Shahnaz, 27, was indicted Thursday after she allegedly laundered more than $85,000 through Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies overseas to the Islamic State.

Rohde credited the FBI New York Joint Terrorism Task Force, as well as the Suffolk County Police Department, for keeping Shahnaz "from her risky and potentially deadly goal". Her plans: to join ISIS, investigators said. "She then laundered and transferred the funds out of the country to support the [Islamic State]".

She converted the credit card funds to buy more than $60,000 in Bitcoins and other digital currencies, the prosecutors said. She was also allegedly able to obtain a loan from a Manhattan bank for approximately $22,500 in June. The ultimate destination for the money was the Islamic State, according to investigators.

Israeli minister vows to 'return Lebanon to the stone age'
I remember a Saudi minister saying they will send Hezbollah back to their caves in south Lebanon. In August, during a meeting with U.N.

After she laundered the money to people in Pakistan, China and Turkey, federal officials say, she "planned to travel to Syria and join ISIS". "Additionally, the defendant conducted numerous internet searches for maps of and locations within ISIS-controlled territory in Syria, and attempted to locate information that would facilitate her entry into Syria". After the transactions were sent, according to the statement, Shahnaz was questioned by law enforcement while attempting to travel to Syria from NY.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Bridget M. Rohde, a five-count indictment was unsealed Thursday in federal court in Central Islip charging Zoobia Shahnaz with bank fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and three substantive counts of money laundering.

Ms Shahnaz faces up to 20 years in prison on each of the money laundering charges and up to 30 years for the bank fraud charge.
