Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney, mother request maximum sentence for Larry Nassar

"A question that has been asked over and over is: How could have Larry Nassar been allowed to assault so many women and girls for more than two decades?"

Once one of the most respected sports physicians in the country specializing in treating gymnasts, Nassar's swift downfall started last August, when a woman filed a police report alleging Nassar had assaulted her during a medical examination years prior, when she was a 15-year-old gymnast in MI seeking treatment for back pain.

The judge Thursday ordered Nassar to serve his federal sentence - 20 years each for three counts - consecutively to state sentences, seemingly foreclosing any possibility he obtains an early release.

"This experience has shattered McKayla", Erin's letter read.

"Your Honor, I would like the court to know that I love Larry Nassar very much", his brother in law wrote.

Nassar, who long claimed that his "treatments" were medically sound and not sexually motivated, said last month that he was pleading guilty because he believed it was time for the community "to heal". In her letter, she mentioned the first time Nassar abused her.

She continued: "My husband once questioned the isolations of the girls during global travel". She was only 15 years old. "She has transformed from a bubbly, positive, loving, world class athlete into a young adult who was deeply depressed, at times suicidal and essentially descended into an emotional abyss". 'More safe than the President of the U.S., ' he said to him. "At times, I was unsure whether I would open her bedroom door and find her dead". "We now know that this was a lie".

Both McKayla and Erin detailed an incident that allegedly took place in 2011 when Maroney competed in the world championships in Tokyo.

"She said to me, 'Mom I thought I was going to die.'" I can not tell you the anguish her Dad and I feel over this, and the responsibility we feel for not being aware of this, or being able to stop it".

She remembers waking up from the team's flight, on which Nassar had given her a sleeping pill, and waking up naked in the doctor's hotel room.

Meanwhile, it's been reported that negotiations to settle federal lawsuits filed by more than 140 abuse survivors against MSU, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee have failed and are now expected to go to trial.

Michigan State has commissioned an internal review of how university employees responded to suspicions about Nassar, but had planned to keep that review confidential, drawing criticism from victims and their attorneys. "No one has apologised", Erin wrote. "After McKayla spoke with an investigator with USA Gymnastics in July 2015, USA Gymnastics and the USOC kept the knowledge of [Nassar's] status as a child molester secret from Michigan State University after 2015 and even said nothing when he ran for school board in his local school district!"

The woman - Rachael Denhollander, 32, of Louisville - then told her story to the Indianapolis Star, prompting dozens of women, including several former Team USA gymnasts, to come forward with similar allegations.

"He abused my trust, he abused my body and he left scars on my psyche that may never go away ..."

Michigan State has vehemently denied any allegations of covering up Nassar's behavior. He could be sentenced up to life in prison for the sexual assault charges.
