Putin, Erdogan voice "serious concern" over Trump's Jerusalem stance

Putin, Erdogan voice

In a telephone conversation on Thursday, the presidents of Russian Federation and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed serious concern in connection with the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, TASS reports citing Kremlin press service.

"This kind of measure can block possible paths to peace in the Middle East", the Kremlin said of US President Donald Trump's move.

According to White House officials, the USA leader is ready to support the two-state solution under a formula agreed by both sides, which will make it possible for Israel and Palestine to coexist peacefully.

Mogherini called for calm and appealed for the "the status quo of the holy places" in Jerusalem to be preserved.

"Both sides expressed serious concern in connection with the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and its announcing plans to move the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem". He also said that it could prompt the Turkish government to cut diplomatic ties with Israel.

The Russian Ambassador has noted that according to the statement, Moscow considers East Jerusalem to be the capital of a future Palestinian state and West Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

While Israel already considered the city its capital, the worldwide community has long declined to recognize that status, and countries have kept embassies in Tel Aviv.

Trump signed that waiver on Wednesday.
