Sir Ian Mckellen wants to play Gandalf again

New Line

Again, this has the potential to become a Game of Thrones-level franchise for Amazon Studios.

For now though, we'll have to keep an out for news regarding casting and the like, as nothing has yet been set in stone. Lord of the Rings has already been made into film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and went on to earn 3 billion dollars and a staggering 17 Academy Awards, with the final film winning 11 alone. It's certainly possible and now, one individual has opened up about making a return, saying he'd be down to come back for more.

The general sentiment in the market remains one of caution and that has been reflected in margin requirements for the contracts. But the trading volume in the one-month contract, which expires in January, fell to just around 1,500 contracts the next day.

British television personality Graham Norton recently brought up the new "Lord of the Rings" series to McKellen during an interview on his BBC Radio 2 talk show (via Digital Spy). However, Gandalf's been on Middle Earth a looong time, so he could easily play a role in this prequel series, depending on what material they decide to cover.

Of course, pretty much everyone in their right mind would probably be very much for the idea of seeing Sir Ian McKellen reprise this role - yet, the question that remains is whether or not this new Lord of the Rings project would even feature the Gandalf character. "But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it?", the actor continued. "Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I'm not too old". And his take on Middle Earth's most iconic wizard was so memorable that it would be hard for another actor to take on the role without facing inevitable, intimidating comparisons. Graham asked McKellen, who slyly replied, "What do you mean, 'another Gandalf?'" Not to mention it'd go a long way to getting people on board with the series, as there's now some ambivalence at the moment, with many feeling that the property doesn't belong on the small screen.
