Slain ex-Yemeni President Saleh buried without solemnities

Supporters of Shiite Houthi rebels attend a rally in Sanaa Yemen following the killing of ex President Ali Abdullah Saleh

Yemeni rebel forces have dispersed a protest staged by dozens of women in the capital, Sanaa, demanding the handover of the body of slain former President Ali Abdullah Saleh for burial.

The United Nations said a food shortage caused by warring parties blocking supplies has created the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Much depends on the future allegiances of his loyalists.

We will remind, last week the President of Yemen Abd rabbu Mansour Hadi ordered to send troops to the capital, where the ongoing conflict between the Houthi rebels and supporters of Saleh.

He added that the killing of Saleh "shows the extent of Iranian interference in the internal affairs of the Arab countries", citing that Saleh was a former president of an Arab country and a leader in a large political party in Yemen.

Saleh was killed in a roadside attack on Monday after switching sides in Yemen's civil war, abandoning his Iran-aligned Houthi allies in favour of a Saudi-led coalition.

Media rights group Reporters Without Borders appealed for the release of 41 journalists it said have been held "hostage" by the group since it overran the headquarters of the Saleh-owned al-Yemen al-Youm TV station on Saturday.

Sanaa saw no fresh fighting on Tuesday after five days of combat that the Red Cross said killed more than 230 people. The Arab League's general secretariat condemned the Iran-aligned Houthi movement which killed Saleh as a "terrorist organisation" and demanded that the worldwide community view it as such.

Saleh's death deepens the complexity of the multi-sided war.

Saleh, who ruled in Sanaa from 1978-2012, had a strong following in Yemen, including army officers and armed tribal leaders who once served under him.

His family's allies have battled the Houthis since last week, a dramatic turn in a conflict that had been largely stalemated for much of the past three years. He called for his father's backers to "take back Yemen from the Iranian Houthi militias".

But his legacy is mixed.

"So this is where we've all got to roll up our sleeves".

He said it could either push the conflict towards United Nations peace negotiations or make it an "even more vicious war". "The war will not end soon", said Aswan Abdu Khalid, an academic at the psychology department at the University of Aden.
