CES Tech Conference Hit with Major Power Outage

A major power outage at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas on Wednesday (10 January), left the world's largest annual consumer tech trade show in the dark for almost two hours.

Record-breaking rains hit Las Vegas on Tuesday, leading to flooding and the closing of some major booths, including Google's.

"The power has gone out in the central hall at CES... sending thousands of attendees out of the LVCC, shutting down hundreds of expensive marketing activations and reminding us that none of this stuff works without electricity", he tweeted.

The Consumer Technology Association issued a statement saying that Nevada Energy has addressed the cause of the problem, which resulted in an outage impacting the sprawling Central and South halls. It took about two hours before power was restored. "Again, thank you for your patience during this time", explained the CES Twitter account, at 4:20 p.m. EST.

Batteries and motors are getting smaller and more powerful, making electric scooters and even single-wheeled devices good for all day use over many miles. In a hilarious twist, the event lost power for nearly two hours, leading to some areas getting closed.

Twitter was soon flooded with photos and videos of the eerily darkened halls while some companies pounced on the opportunity to advertise their ware. The glittering lights, the myriad laptops, the enormous TVs-they all went dark. Any tech being shown off at the show that requires an outlet isn't operational.

The power outrage, caused by an error with fairly rudimentary electronics, is ironic considering the wealth of next-generation technology exhibited throughout the event. The power went out in the central hall of #CES2018!

Others pointed at the irony of people being outraged at the loss of power in a convention center while people in Puerto Rico continued to live without electricity for four months and counting. Some meeting rooms in South Hall also lost power.
