Three months before killing 58 people and wounding more than 500 in Las Vegas last October, the gunman behind the deadliest mass shooting in US history sent emails discussing buying bump stocks, which can make semiautomatic rifles fire hundreds of rounds a minute, media reports on unsealed search warrants showed.
The Las Vegas gunman exchanged emails about buying rifles and bump stocks months before he carried out the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history using guns equipped with the device that allows semi-automatic weapons to fire almost as fast as automatic ones.
Her boyfriend, Stephen Paddock, shot himself dead after firing from a Las Vegas Strip casino into a concert crowd, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds.
But investigators said the use of bump stocks on the night of the shooting allowed Paddock to fire rifles nearly as though they were automatic weapons.
The documents also showed that Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, told investigators before they searched a house that the two shared that they might find her fingerprints on ammunition "because she occasionally participated in loading magazines", the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
Newly unsealed search warrants show that investigators trying to piece together the details of the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas have not yet found a motive.
They also show that agents sought the email, Facebook and Instagram accounts of Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, who was in the Philippines during the October 1 shooting.
Paddock wrote back that he wanted to try several scopes and different types of ammunition. One email sent to the second account suggested Paddock try a bump stock with a 100-round magazine "for a thrill", according to CNN. The FBI special agent who signed the affidavit argued that since only that phone was locked, any information related to a criminal conspiracy would be found on it.
Reuters was unable to obtain a copy of the documents on Friday night.
Federal authorities sought access to email addresses used by Paddock and Danley as well as Instagram, Facebook, Google and Amazon accounts they might have used. Prosecutors didn't oppose the request from media organizations including The Associated Press to release affidavits that were filed to get search warrants.
Two of the cellphones were unlocked and authorities were able to examine them, producing no significant information about Paddock's plans or preparations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation wrote.
A USA judge is being asked to unseal documents telling what federal agents learned before searching properties belonging to the gunman responsible for the October 1 massacre on the Las Vegas Strip.
