Donald Trump must apologise for comments - African Union

U.S. President Donald Trump listens during a meeting with lawmakers on immigration policy in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington on Tuesday

"I read those comments later last night, the first thing that came to my mind was very unfortunate, unhelpful", the Wisconsin Republican said Friday at the WisPolitics Luncheon in Milwaukee.

Trump later tweeted Friday morning that he never said anything derogatory.

Haiti and Botswana summoned United States ambassadors to explain the comments reportedly made at a White House meeting as part of an attempt by Republicans and Democrats to protect from deportation 700,000 children brought to the usa illegally as children. On Friday the president tweeted that his language was "tough" but insisted he did not say anything derogatory about Haitians aside from noting it's a poor country.

Trump is however known to have made outrageous comments in the past and then turning around to deny ever making them. There is bipartisan support for some form of protection, but just how much and what immigration enforcements need to be added in exchange is what's being negotiated now.

"We do not recall the president saying these comments specifically, but what he did call out was the imbalance in our current immigration system, which does not protect American workers and our national interest", the statement said. Durbin noted that Graham confronted the president about his remarks.

A source familiar with the meeting told CNN's Jake Tapper the President did not refer to Haiti as a "shithole" country but Trump did ask why the USA needs more Haitians and pushed to "take them out" of the deal. (King seems to have broken with Trump more frequently in recent weeks, having also spoken out against the president's revocation of temporary protected status for Salvadorans and Trump's signature tax law.) Rep. Dan Donovan, who also opposed the Trump-supported tax plan on the grounds that it will harm New Yorkers, was more circumspect in his statement.

Botswana condemned President Donald Trump's alleged remarks calling African nations "shithole countries".

US President Donald Trump sparked global furore after reportedly using the phrase "shithole countries" to describe Haiti and African countries this week. He said Trump's comment "not only insulted Africans, he has also insulted African-Americans".

Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who wasn't in the meeting, in a tweet called the president's remarks, "Breathtakingly offensive".

"The president of the United States is racist", CNN's Don Lemon said on Thursday night.

"And we know how his restrictive immigration policies are hurting our people in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, a lot of them reunited here in the Bolivarian Alliance".

The Government of Botswana is wondering why President Trump, must use this descriptor and derogatory word, when talking about countries with whom the U.S. has had cordial and mutually beneficial bilateral relations for so many years. But two immigration hard-liners, Republican Sens.

CBS News reports that the Haitian government promptly summoned charge d'affairs Robin Diallo, the top US diplomat in the country, to respond to the comments.

"For example, let's say you think black people are lesser and let's say you're also going to talk about it in public", he continued.
