Ex-military chief Anan detained in Cairo, his presidential campaign organisers say

The Egyptian army's former chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Sami Anan, was detained in Cairo on Tuesday, three of his campaign organizers said, after the army summoned him for questioning over his intention to run for president.

His presidential campaign organisers told Reuters Anan had been arrested in Cairo.

The military gave no immediate comment on the alleged detention and the interior ministry could not immediately be reached for comment.

Annan had served as a member of the powerful Supreme Council of the Armed Forces that ran Egypt immediately after the 2011 uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak, and then again after the military-backed popular revolt that pushed Islamist Mohamed Mursi from power in 2013.

The statement was broadcast through the state-run television and noted that Sami Anan did not get the official approval from the General Command of the Armed Forces to run in the 2018 presidential elections and that he committed "forgery" in official documents.

Buhari meets South East APC leaders in Aso Rock
He also promised to increase the number of ministers. "In a nutshell, the President has not added value to democracy by an inch". The ex-speaker said Buhari refused to carry the APC leaders along because he believed that all politicians were evil.

Egypt's army said it would investigate a former military chief who's challenged incumbent Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi for the presidency, a move likely to end his aspirations before the race begins.

Anan announced his presidential bid in a video declaration posted on his official Facebook page last week.

Earlier, Egyptian authorities stormed the homes of Anan's presidential campaigners and arrested a number of them.

Egypt will hold its presidential election in March, and a run-off vote the next month if no candidate wins more than 50 percent in the first round.

Former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq said on 7 January that he would not stand, reversing a pledge he made from the United Arab Emirates in November.
