Larry Nassar sentenced to 175 years for abusing gymnasts

People walk near Madison Square Garden Tuesday Jan. 23 2018 in New York the location for the 60th annual Grammy Awards which will be held on Sunday

"Sir, you do not deserve to walk outside of a prison ever again", Aquilina said before providing her sentence.

The gymnastics governing body and Michigan State claim they reported Nassar's abuse immediately after learning about it but several victims have said they reported the abuse years before and were ignored.

"It is my honour and privilege to sentence you".

The former sports doctor has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting seven females between 1998 and 2015, and also has a 60-year prison sentence for child pornography charges.

Roughly two dozen more submitted written statements that weren't read aloud in court. He said no and "I accept my plea". "They will be the words that burn down cultural stereotypes and cultural myths". The victims who packed the courtroom gasped as they heard passages that included "Hell hath no fury than a woman scorned" and another statement in which Nassar said the "stories" about him were fabricated. "It is a complete nightmare". He wrote that the FBI had investigated him in 2015 but didn't file charges "because it was medical".

"Your decision to assault was precise, calculated, manipulative, devious, despicable", Judge Aquilina said to Nassar. She asked: "You are guilty, aren't you?" He replied that he had said his plea.

Aquilina said the letter convinced her that "you have not yet owned what you did". "There's no treatment here, sir".

"Victims were silenced, intimidated, and even forced to go back for treatment", DenHollander told the court, referring to MSU.

Nassar looked stricken during the judge's remarks.

Nassar has 21 days to appeal his sentence. Throughout much of the proceedings, the bespectacled Nassar sat with his head bowed, rarely making eye contact with his victims.

He said "no words" can describe how sorry he is for his crimes. "I will carry your words with me for the rest of my days".

Rachael Denhollander was the first person to file a criminal complaint against Nassar in 2016.

Aquilina spoke harshly about Nassar throughout the weeklong sentencing hearing, at one point telling him that if cruel and unusual punishment was allowable she would have others abuse him in the same way he abused his victims. She said Nassar groped and fondled her when she was a 15-year-old gymnast in MI.

Those were the powerful questions posed by former gymnast Rachael Denhollander at Nassar's criminal sentencing hearing on Wednesday.

Aquilina said the letter proved that Nassar did not "get it". "An acceptable apology to all of you is impossible to write and convey". "We are sorry for the pain caused by this awful man, and sorry that you weren't afforded a safe opportunity to pursue your sports dreams. The Olympic family is among those that have failed you".

The case has gained global attention and has resulted in loud cries for institutional change at USA Gymnastics, the U.S. Olympics committee and Michigan State University, where Nassar was employed for decades.

"I am profoundly saddened that a single woman, a single girl, a single athlete was hurt".

The NCAA bylaws require colleges to protect their athletes in regard to their health, safety and well-being.
