Major power outage hits CES, a consumer electronics show

Solving all kinds of nonexistent problems poorly

Power was restored a little more than two hours later.

Technology brands including Intel and IBM have been quick to jump into the social conversation with a tongue-in-cheek brand approach after a blackout struck the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Practically everything at the CES was running on electricity and while the backup generator did kick in, which powered some booths, many areas were left in the dark. Their initial investigation pointed to condensation caused by recent heavy rainfall which affected a transformer.

The lights went out here shortly after 11 am on the second day of the show. "We are grateful to NV Energy for their swift assistance, to our customers and their clients for their patience and to the staff for ensuring the safety and security of all attendees and exhibitors".

A preliminary assessment found that moisture from heavy rains on Tuesday had caused a "flashover" in one of the convention center's transformers, it said.

U.S. ambassador to Panama resigns, says he can't work under Trump anymore
The U.S. ambassador to Panama has resigned, saying that he no longer felt able to serve President Donald Trump . But Under-secretary of State Steve Goldstein seemed to confirm as much in comments to reporters on Friday.

When the lights went out, Twitter lit up with photos and updates from attendees.

CES, the Consumer Electronics Show, features nearly 4,000 exhibitors showcasing their newest consumer technologies.

Some exhibitors kept going, however. Samsung, Intel, LG and Panasonic were among the tech companies that lost power.

During the blackout, Roadshow editor in chief Tim Stevens tweeted that the lights also flickered at a hotel where he was on the other side of town.

Sudden record-breaking downpours on Day One of CES was the first rain for Las Vegas in 116 days, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Local flights were delayed and canceled, and floodwaters prompted several rescues. Power was fully restored at 2:10 p.m., as was shared by the organizers of CES 2018.
