Marijuana to be sold in private stores in Sask. come July 1

The provincial government announced Monday its initial plan for retailing legal marijuana in Saskatchewan, starting in July.

The SLGA will issue 60 retail permits for stores in up to 40 municipalities and First Nations communities with populations of 2,500 across the province.

With the impending legalization of marijuana on Canada Day, Saskatchewan says cannabis will be distributed by private retailers and regulated by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority. Municipalities will have the option to opt out of having a cannabis store if they choose. It also could fall to zero if Prince Albert city council decides against hosting an retail outlets. Additional permits may be allocated for larger communities.

The private sector will control the wholesale and retail side of pot sales under regulation by the SLGA. Cannabis retailers will be required to establish a standalone storefront operation, with the option to also operate an online store.

Saskatchewan will allow cannabis to be sold by private retailers.

An independent third party will assist the SLGA in the two-phase process used to select permit recipients. They will also have to track and report inventory, and will only be able to buy from regulated wholesalers. The second phase will be a random selection lottery.

Specific details regarding application criteria, permit licensing fees, application timelines and other associated details will be finalized over the coming weeks.

The province still hasn't announced the minimum age for cannabis consumption.
