Kang will have a tall task in The Waling Dead Season 9, shepherding a show that will be without **SPOILER ALERT**Carl Grimes for the first time in its history**SPOILER ALERT OVER* em *Fear the Walking Dead - though that could all be within flashback.

Although the ratings have dipped this season, The Walking Dead continues to be a powerhouse performer for network AMC, so it should come as no surprise that the show has been renewed for ninth season. He will be replaced as showrunner by writer Angela Kang, who has been with the show since season 2.

As it turns out, Gimple isn't leaving but instead he's also being promoted as chief content officer to oversee all things for "The Walking Dead" including work on spinoff series "Fear the Walking Dead" as well as content on other platforms such as online or video games. One of the biggest challenges for The Walking Dead in the immediate future is convincing viewers that they should still watch after a super controversial decision to kill off the character Carl, who was enormously popular with most fans.

Though The Walking Dead prevails as the number one TV show for adults 18-49, it's still fallen off.

Episode 8x01, titled Mercy, set "into motion, with emotion, the next 100 episodes" according to The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple. Kirkman is still very much involved with "The Walking Dead" and will remain in his same role as executive producer but keeping Gimple in place was a crucial piece of the puzzle. The next-closest competitor this season, "The Big Bang Theory", is almost a full point behind it at 2.9.

The Walking Dead will resume with new episodes on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 9/8c on AMC. "Angela is a big part of the heart and soul of The Walking Dead, and I'm thrilled to help facilitate her vision of the show's next era".

Season 8 of The Walking Dead will kick off on October 22, 2017. Among the episodes of the show she has written are the Season 2 episode "Judge, Jury, Executioner", the Season 4 episode "Still", and the Season 7 episode "The Cell".

Kang becomes the fourth showrunner in the history of The Walking Dead.

Kang is "beyond thrilled" to take on this new role, "Working on this series and having the opportunity to adapt Robert Kirkman's incredible comic has been a fangirl dream come true for me", said Kang. "I'm excited to continue working with Scott and the wonderfully supportive folks at AMC, and can't wait to share the next chapter of the story with our fans next fall".
