Uber meeting with all-party committee of BC legislature Monday

The Uber logo is seen in front of protesting taxi drivers at the Montreal courthouse

The committee was formed at the urging of BC Green Leader Andrew Weaver, after the NDP government walked back its pledge to have ride-hailing in place by the end of past year. Green MLA Adam Olsen rapped the party for asking the committee to include taxis in its review.

"The committee comprises MLAs from all three parties, will engage with expert witnesses, debate the issue and produce a report", Weaver said in a statement in the fall.

It has been charged with crafting a report of recommendations that will be used to help draft legislation to enable ride-hailing services. The report is due February 15. Last month, Uber launched its food delivery service Uber Eats.

Ride-hailing, provided by companies like Uber, allows customers to order and pay for a ride by using their smartphones.

Red Cross issues urgent plea for blood donors
In New York, 10 blood drives were forced to cancel due to the winter storm, causing 235 donations to go uncollected. The organization's need for additional blood donors is "urgent", said American Red Cross spokeswoman Maya Franklin.

The B.C. NDP matched the B.C. Liberal election promise to introduce ride-hailing by the end of 2017, but NDP Transportation Minister Claire Trevena retreated and ordered a review of the taxi industry first. Instead, that review focused exclusively on the taxi industry, local governments, consumer and business interest groups, with a report expected early this year.

Weaver said the committee will consider insurance, public safety and the impact of ride-hailing on different communities and municipalities across the province.

The all-party committee meets Monday in downtown Vancouver at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue, 580 West Hastings St.
