BT and Sky pay £4.5bn for Premier League rights deals

Sky and BT to pay £4.464bn for Premier League football broadcast rights

The Premier League's United Kingdom broadcast rights sales process has not yet concluded, but we can announce that five of the seven live packages have been awarded.

This means that Sky will broadcast games at 8pm on a Friday; 5.30pm and 7.45pm on a Saturday night; 2pm and 4pm on a Sunday and at 8pm on a Monday night, and have rights to a total of 128 games.

BT won one package and will pay £295 million per season.

However, unless its buys one of the two unsold packages, BT's overall Premier League cost will fall from £320m to £295m per season.

The remaining 40 fixtures a season up for grabs cover mid-week and Bank Holiday football. That is the question after the latest sale of English Premier League (EPL) rights to Sky and BT came in at £4.46bn - less than the £5.14bn value of the current deal.

In 2015, the Premier League sold its most current round of TV rights packages, the details of which are a bit confusing.

The total price paid for the five packages comes to £4.464 billion.

Hawks raid Gupta family's Saxonwold compound
Hawks spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said the raid was part of an investigation into allegations of influence peddling. Other reports claimed that other members of the family were negotiating to hand themselves over.

The Premier League is a big part of our live sport line-up, which includes the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, the Emirates FA Cup, MotoGP, boxing, Aviva Premiership rugby and European Rugby Champions Cup. "It is already challenging to sign up to both BT Sports and Sky Sports, but had an online giant got involved that would have meant another billing relationship and destination".

BT has secured rights to Saturday lunchtime kick-offs at a cost of £9.2m each.

Sky, the Premier League's main broadcast partner since the competition was established in 1992, will broadcast 128 out of 200 available games, including all fixtures on Fridays, Sundays and Mondays.

The amount raised so far, however, is below the $8 billion raised in 2015 for three-year packages to show 168 games a season.

"We will now continue the sales process to deliver the best possible outcome for the remaining packages of rights in the United Kingdom and throughout the rest of the world".

Marc Allera, chief executive of BT's Consumer division, said : "The Premier League is undoubtedly the most competitive and exciting domestic league in the world, so we're delighted that our customers will be able to continue enjoying Saturday games on BT Sport".

Amazon are rumoured to be interested in acquiring the rights to Premier League football, which would be a first for the game.
