Canada defeats Switzerland 10-3 to win mixed doubles curling gold medal

Canada's Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris won the first-ever Winter Games gold medal in mixed doubles curling on Tuesday defeating Switzerland 10-3 in six ends at the Gangneung Curling Centre in South Korea

GANGNEUNG, South Korea (AP) - With a triumphant hug and fist pump, Canada won the first-ever Olympic gold medal in curling mixed doubles, beating Switzerland 10-3 on Tuesday in front of a roaring crowd of jubilant Canadians. As the top seed in the playoffs, Canada had hammer to start the final.

Morris, 39, was an Olympic champion at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics playing third for the now-retired Kevin Martin, and Lawes won gold at the 2014 Sochi Games in Russian Federation as vice for Jennifer Jones.

Boutin, who had finished fourth in the 500-metre race, was bumped into the third place after judges disqualified South Korean speedskater Minjeong Choi for interfering with Italy's Arianna Fontana.

When mixed doubles curling got the green light to be an Olympic sport less than three years ago, Canada wasn't that good at it. "The best things about our team is we are patient, we learn from our mistakes and we're continually trying to be better".

Photo Mixed doubles curling is an Olympic event for the first time, and Lawes and Morris are the first gold medalists. The 29-year-old won gold at the 2014 Sochi Games in Russian Federation playing third for Jennifer Jones.

"Having that longer week and the format (at the trials) really helped us", Morris said. "It feels fantastic, we have a lot of support back home and to be able to help our team out with a gold medal and to be able to bring it back to all our friends and family and all our support back home, it just feels wonderful". Switzerland's Jenny Perret made a nice raise double with her last rock, but Lawes made a raise takeout of her own to score four for Canada, giving them a 6-2 lead. The OAR, however, again evened the match when it tallied two points in the fifth and took its first lead with a steal in the following end.

Chris Rock Netflix Special to Drop on Valentine's Day
On February 3, to the confusion of just about everyone, it released a psuedo-teaser for Tamborine with no connection to Rock. Tamborine , with an appropriately jingly teaser, this marks Rock's first special since Kill the Messenger in 2008 on HBO.

Lawes said she and Morris had prepared themselves to battle it out against Switzerland until the eighth end.

Earlier, husband-and-wife team Anastasia Bryzgalova and Aleksandr Krushelnitckii beat Norway's Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten 8-4 to take bronze.

German Natalie Geisenberger captured her second consecutive gold medal in 3:05.232 while compatriot Dajana Eitberger was second in 3:05.599.

"You never know how many times you're going to get to an Olympics and it's just such a privilege if you can get one", Morris said.

The awarding of the bronze medal to Boutin, of Sherbrooke, Que., capped what began as a disappointing day for the Canadian team. "I don't think even the first one [her Sochi 2014 gold] has sunk in and I don't think it ever will". "But short track is short track, so sometimes you have to deal with what is happening". "I think that it's here to stay and I can't wait to see how well it does in Canada".

When the International Olympic Committee announced it would be a 2018 Olympic sport, former Canadian and world men's champion Jeff Stoughton was hired by Curling Canada to oversee a mixed doubles program in hurry-up mode.
