Cleveland Indians manager, Terry Francona's dad dies at 84

Tito Francona, father of Indians manager Terry, dies at 84 years old

The Indians revealed the sad news on social media.

Francona, who spent 15 years in the Major League Baseball, played with the Indians for six years. He hit.272 with 224 doubles, 125 homers and 46 steals in 15 seasons in the majors.

Mr. Francona's best year was his first with the Indians, in 1959 after arriving there in a trade with the Detroit Tigers for outfielder Larry Doby, who had broken the color barrier in the American League.

"No. 1, I told him to never lie to a player", said Tito in a 2012 interview with He was the manager for the 2004 Red Sox's famous "curse" breaking victory that included coming back from a 3-0 series deficit to the Yankees in the ALCS.

His full name was John Patsy Francona, but everyone called him Tito.

There will be private services to celebrate the elder Francona's life.

Virginia at Miami Hurricanes
Where the Blue Devils played one of the best games of their season, the Hokies played one of their worst. It had beaten current No. 1 Virginia on Saturday in overtime on Virginia's home floor.

Debuting as a member of the Baltimore Orioles, Francona burst onto the baseball scene in 1956, tying with Indians outfielder Rocky Colavito for second in Rookie of the Year voting behind Chicago White Sox shortstop Luis Aparicio.

He ended his career with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970. But I'd always see Terry sitting behind home plate, watching the game.

After he was sacked in Boston following the 2011 season, Terry Francona spent a year in broadcasting before he was hired by the Indians.

In 2001, he was named to the Top 100 Indians roster. "Not only was he a really good player in our franchise history but he was a friend to so many of us". At left is his son, Terry Francona, the Cleveland manager. There have been so many great things for the organization and for me personally. In Cleveland, he was closer to his dad, who would occasionally drive in for games.

"He was such a warm, thoughtful, exuberant person that brightened every room he walked into".

Material from the Associated Press was used in this obituary.
