In the, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 10 new child deaths and the highest flu hospitalization rate since the agency started keeping comparable records in 2010.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control say this flu season just keeps getting worse and they aren't sure why.

The CDC does not count the number of adult deaths, however Dr Jernigan previously said that he expects the number of pediatric deaths to be similar as the 2014 season that killed 148 children.

According to the most recent CDC report for the last week of January, ten percent of all deaths in the country were related to the flu.

"I wish there was better news this week, but nearly everything we're looking at is bad news", Dr. Anne Schuchat, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said during a news conference Friday.

Flu is sickening and hospitalizing Americans at rates not seen in almost a decade, and the season is getting worse, federal health officials said Friday.

"The last severe season that we had, 56,000 Americans died from influenza. I wish there was better news, but everything we are looking at is bad news", says Schuchat in CDC's weekly flu surveillance report. Nationwide influenza activity is at 7.7 percent, breaking the 2003-2004 non-pandemic year.

"About 2/3 of the people who are hospitalized have some other condition when they get the flu, but 1/3 don't and are perfectly healthy", said Catherine Troisi, UTHealth School of Public Health.

The show of unity was striking as the athletes from the North and the South walked together side by side at the opening ceremony. It warned against agreeing to talks before North Korea scrapped its nuclear program, saying it would only "benefit the enemy".

"Unfortunately, more deaths are likely to happen". According to Schuchat, the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza is 10.1% this week.

Former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anthony Fauci said this flu season is one of the worst.

He says closing the school for two days prior to last weekend helped, but within a few days they had to close two elementary schools again because of the spread of the virus.

Crystal Whitley, who teaches in Mullin, got the flu shot in October after giving birth to her son, family members told ABC affiliate WFAA.

Likewise, 10,726 cases of the flu had been reported to DHEC in the week from January 28 to February 3.

Angie Barwise was first diagnosed with flu, bronchitis, and strep during the holidays.

"There is a lot of fear and alarm about this flu season", Schuchat said.
