Facebook pushes security app (that it owns) that tracks users' mobile usage

Facebook Protect is a feature for iOS devices that directs people to a virtual private network (VPN) app called Onavo Protect, which Facebook snapped up in 2013.

They are also popular for bypassing restrictions on free speech in a number of authoritarian states across the globe, including China. The company is actually collecting and analysing the data of Onavo users.

Press it, and you'll be taken to your phone's respective app store to download Onavo Protect. On the app store, Onavo's description reveals it is "a part of Facebook", and that it can be used to "improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and service people value, and build better experiences" - similar to the policy Facebook has in place for its other platforms.

Instead, Onavo's VPN allow Facebook to monitor user activity across apps, giving Facebook a big advantage in terms of spotting new trends across the larger mobile ecosystem.

Have you tried the Onavo VPN?

No Power-Sharing Breakthrough As British, Irish PMs Meet In Belfast
She said: "In our view, there is no current prospect of these discussions leading to an Executive being formed". The party leader added: "If the public are frustrated at the pace of progress, we all are as well".

Onavo Protect (left) promises to secure iPhones and iPads by routing online traffic through its secure servers. This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data.

'Like other VPNs, it acts as a secure connection to protect people from potentially harmful sites.

'The app may collect your mobile data traffic to help us recognise tactics that bad actors use. It's worth noting that, a free VPN like Hola, was doing far more nefarious things with your information than Facebook would ever do - yet nobody questioned it until the extent of what it was doing with your harvested data and IP addresses became clear. After chasing Snapchat, iMessage or Instagram with feature additions in the latter, it monetized with things like company chat bots, and other weird ways that are not in-your-face ads while you are humbly conversing with your beau.

They increase privacy and the internet security of users connected to public networks.

Theoretically, all the information that passes through a VPN secure and cannot be intercepted by anyone else. Disconnect Pro is a VPN that also blocks tracking and malware, so it may be a good alternative to Onavo Protect if that's what you're looking for. VPNs also help users in authoritarian countries bypass censors by convincing websites their country of origin is, for example, the U.S. or Switzerland, the latter of which has some of the world's strictest privacy laws.
