Falklands under the cone of a partial solar eclipse on Thursday

Solar Eclipse 2018 path map from NASA

On Thursday, February 15, sky-gazers will be treated to a gorgeous celestial event, when the moon will block a portion of the sun, leading to a partial solar eclipse. However, the Indian hemisphere will not be able to witness this one.

The eclipse will happen on February 15 and will be visible across South America and Antarctica, according to Time and Date, giving viewers in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil, and southern Paraguay the chance to witness the sight. In the complete solar eclipse, the moon covers the sun completely, so that the sun's light does not reach the Earth. The occurrence of the solar eclipse occurs when the Moon, the Sun and the Earth are in a straight line. This is called a transit, basically the same thing as an eclipse, but more broadly, a transit occurs simply when one object in space passes in front of another object in space, according to NASA. The eclipse occurred when the Earth passed between the spacecraft and the sun, completely hiding the sun's view from the SDO. The moon is expected to cover up to 40 percent of the sun in locations like Ushuaia, Argentina, according to National Geographic. Though it is a partial Solar eclipse but the effects will be same as the Total Solar eclipse. "If you didn't know it was happening, you wouldn't even notice it".

Argentina, Chile, and southernmost parts of Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil will be able to witness this celestial event, but this astronomical event will not be visible in India.

Shannon Abraham from Reno, Nevada, said she spent dozens of hours designing and making her elaborate silver-sequined dress. Rex, which is the city's oldest parading group, decorated 21 of their 28 floats with images of the city's history.

Space.com says the eclipse's path will begin over Antarctica, then move up and over Southern America, with a maximum magnitude of 0.599. Eclipse will begin to appear in Antarctic from 5: 43 in the evening and will remain in the evening up to 7:34 pm. So even photographers and enthusiast wanting to capture the event should use pinhole cameras, and always have the UV filter for your lenses.

According to the guidelines set by NASA, one should avoid looking at the sun directly/with the naked eye. According to the scientists, taking safety measures is important before observing the solar eclipse. If you ignore these recommendations, you can lose your eyesight instantaneously or permanently. On July 13, the Sun would appear crescent-shaped over Australia and Antarctica, while the August 11 will play over the North Pole, northern Europe, and parts of northern and eastern Asia.
