Israeli military trial opens for Palestinian girl hero

Palestinians launch 6th attempt to blow up Israeli court

The judge made a decision to hold the hearing behind closed doors despite protests from the Tamimi family who say media attention is essential to ensure a fair trial.

According to Palestinian statistics, some 6,400 Palestinians are now being held in Israeli prisons, including roughly 500 in administrative detention.

Her father, Bassem Tamimi, shouted: "Stay strong!"

Closed-door proceedings were held for a couple hours before adjourning.

Tamimi's father, Bassem, told The Associated Press as he headed into the court on Tuesday that he comes "with no good expectations, because this a military court, and it's part of the Israeli military occupation".

The next session in the case was set for March 11.

"It's about time they will understand that people like her have to be in jail and not be allowed to incite".

Many Israelis say Ahed Tamimi has always been exploited by her family, who they accuse of using her to try to provoke Israeli soldiers on film.

Israelis accuse her family of using her as a pawn in staged provocations. She was arrested, and now faces charges of aggravated assault, obstructing the work of soldiers, and incitement.

The charges relate to events in the video and five other incidents.

She said Assange "appears to consider himself above the normal rules of law and wants justice only if it goes in his favor". Assange to the United States" and risk touching off a diplomatic crisis involving Britain, Sweden and the United States.

Ahed's mother, Nariman, also faces trial over her involvement in the slapping incident, in which she filmed Ahed with a cellphone camera calling on her fellow Palestinians to stab Israelis, throw rocks at them and offer themselves as suicide bombers in order to "liberate Palestine".

Nariman was charged for posting videos of her daughter's protests against Israel on Facebook, and was accused of "incit [ing] others to commit terrorist attacks", said The Guardian News website.

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has criticised Israeli authorities" actions in the case, while the European Union has expressed concern over Israel "s detention of minors, including Ahed Tamimi.

"As an unarmed girl, Ahed posed no threat during the altercation with the two Israeli soldiers who were heavily armed and wearing protective clothing", said Magdalena Mughrabi, Amnesty International's deputy director for the Middle East and Africa.

Tamimi has been in detention in Israel since her arrest at her home in December where she was filmed physically confronting Israel soldiers at her family's property in Nabi Salah in the Israel-occupied West Bank.

The Palestinians walked away in December from US-led attempts to revive the peace talks when Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Many times, Palestinian security forces help escort the Israelis out of the Palestinian areas and hand them over to Israeli authorities.

The Palestinian government also slammed an Israeli bill to deduct money for families of Palestinian prisoners or those killed by Israel from Palestinian tax revenues collected by Israel, describing any deduction as "an act of piracy".

She was reportedly upset after learning that her 15-year-old cousin had been seriously injured after being shot in the head by a rubber bullet during stone-throwing clashes nearby.

Palestinians have flooded social media with praise and support.
