NOPD responding to second parade route shooting

Operation Lost Kids activated now through Mardi Gras

The first incident took place near the Mardi Gras parade route around 3.15 pm on Tuesday (2.45 am Wednesday Indian time), when one person was killed in a shooting, New Orleans Advocate reported.

Police spokeswoman Ambria Washington said in a news release last night that initial reports show there were possibly five people shot, two fatally, at a gas station in the 5100 block of St. Claude Avenue in the Lower 9th Ward.

Gunfire erupted in the 2400 block of St. Charles Avenue (near Second Street) around 4:30 p.m., after two men got into an argument in the street on the opposite side of the parade route, New Orleans police said.

After days of parades, balls, king cake and costumes, Fat Tuesday has concluded and the city is entering a period of restraint with Lent.

Father Larry Gosselin, wore Mardi Gras beads on Fat Tuesday. "It's a family thing down here".

One man was shot in the head and is in critical condition, the other, a male juvenile, was shot in the leg according to Deputy Superintendent Paul Noel.

As for April Fools' Day, he said, "God is a mystery and we celebrate the mystery of God's love".

A man appeared to have been shot twice during a separate fight, and died after being rushed to the hospital, Police Chief Michael Harrison said.

Families usually pack up and go home after the parades are over although celebrations in the French Quarter extend into the late evening before police do a ceremonial clearing of the streets at midnight.

Some people enjoying the Mardi Gras celebration at The Palace Grill in Santa Barbara were caught off guard when they learned the dates. His condition is unknown.

Police clarified Wednesday that two teenage boys were wounded in one of the parade route shootings.

Neighbourhood organizations are among the first groups out on Mardi Gras.

Zulu, the first parade, was already rolling on a route that ends on Canal street, the edge of the Quarter, with crowds jostling and shouting for beads, toy spears and Zulu's signature painted coconuts. Then they are going to get a good spot outside a po'boy sandwich shop to watch the Zulu parade.

Shannon Abraham from Reno, Nevada, said she spent dozens of hours designing and making her elaborate silver-sequined dress.

The anniversary of this Louisiana port city will feature prominently in Fat Tuesday's festivities. Rex, which is the city's oldest parading group, decorated 21 of their 28 floats with images of the city's history.
