Quinn Norton Named to Editorial Board | The New York Times Company

On Tuesday afternoon, The New York Times announced that it had hired Quinn Norton, a journalist and an essayist known for her work at Wired magazine, as the editorial board's lead opinion writer on technology.

A new opinion writer at the New York Times has been sacked just seven hours after her employment was announced. But some six hours later, Norton had been dismissed from the paper after Twitter users immediately began highlighting her past tweets that used racial and homophobic slurs. Critics also lambasted Norton for referring to Andrew Auernheimer, who helps run the neo-Nazi website the Daily Stormer, as her friend.

The Times released a statement Tuesday evening from James Bennett, the editorial page editor, saying the tweets were "new information to us". "Based on it, we've chose to go our separate ways", Bennet said in a tweet posted by the newspaper's communications department.

Norton didn't respond to a request for comment, though later she posted a series of tweets defending her work, her relationships and use of slurs.

Norton's career at the Times may be incredibly short-lived, but her hiring continues to cause an online stir, with many Twitter users complaining that the American print publication didn't look deep enough into Norton's background before bringing her on.

Norton tweeted her support of Auernheimer in October.

Bill Paxton's family blames surgeon, world-famous hospital for actor's 2017 death
The complaint added that Paxton suffered multiple complications and that Khoynezhad was not in the operating room at the time. The actor, born in Fort Worth, Texas, was starring in USA broadcaster CBS's Training Day series when he died.

Norton then said there is a chance the neo-Nazis who she knows will not hurt minorities because she is friends with them. In October, she tweeted that Auernheimer, commonly known as "Weev", is "a bad person, & an old friend of mine". I've been very clear on this.

In response to criticism of a retweet that used the n-word, Norton wrote that it was sarcasm.

"Here's the deal, faggot", Norton wrote in one tweet from 2013.

A tweet from Norton also was quoted in the article: "I'm sorry I can't do the work I wanted to do with them".

Norton may well have been using these slurs ironically, she may well have befriended a Nazi in the hopes of redeeming him, but she has also been hoisted by her own SJW petard. "I wish there had been a way, but ultimately, they need to feel safe with how the net will react to their opinion writers", she posted as part of a chain of messages, one of which asserted that she believes that "all people are redeemable".

In a lengthy first-person essay in the Atlantic, Norton wrote about how and why she agreed to meet with prosecutors during the investigation. I caveated everything with: if this is at all uncomfortable, not what you were looking for, no harm no foul, thanks for the ask.
