Slow Eating May Reduce Obesity Risk, Study Says

Weight loss

A previous study, by experts at North Carolina State University in the U.S., found "mindful eating" - savouring every mouthful, concentrating on flavour and "eating with purpose" - helped people lose six times as much weight as other slimmers. An analysis of these answers compared to the BMI and waist measurements of the respondents revealed that slow eaters had a 42 percent lower chance of being obese compared to fast eaters, while people who ate at normal speed had a 29 percent lower chance.

Although absolute reductions in waist circumference - an indicator of a potentially harmful midriff bulge - were small, they were greater among the slow and normal speed eaters. It is also considered important dietary advice to not eat after the evening meal, or in the two hours before bedtime. At the start, more than half of the people said to eat at a "normal" speed while a third admitted to being "fast" eaters and the rest self-identified as "slow" eaters.

In a study published in the BMJ Open, researchers analyzed data from nearly 60,000 people in Japan with type 2 diabetes who came in for medical appointments between 2008 and 2013.

"Interventions aimed at altering eating habits, such as education initiatives and programmes to reduce eating speed, may be useful in preventing obesity and reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases", the authors write.

But, eating slowly may very well play a role in curbing obesity, said Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center in Derby, Conn.

Specifically, three behaviors- eating more slowly, not eating within two hours before going to bed, and cutting out after-dinner snacks were all linked to weight loss.

Korea's united Olympic squad: symbol of hope or mere political stunt?
Pence did not interact with the North Koreans even though he was seated in the same box as them at Friday's opening ceremony. Moon's chief of staff, Yim Jong-suk, held a private farewell dinner for the delegation at a hotel in Seoul on Sunday.

When eating too quickly, there's more chance that these hormones won't get the chance to work properly, Rebecca, who is a Nutritional Therapist, said.

Skipping breakfast, however, did not seem to have any effect. Only about 4,190 were self-professed slow eaters.

Leah Cahill, an assistant professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax who researches eating but was not involved in the study, says the results are empowering.

'Eating quickly also causes bigger blood sugar fluctuations which can lead to insulin resistance. "Those who naturally eat slowly may be attending to their body's cues for fullness, and eat a more appropriate portion during each eating occasion", Nina Crowley, Ph.D., a registered dietitian nutritionist and health psychologist working at the Medical University of SC, told CBS News. The study suggested that this might be because fast eaters consume more food before feeling full.

Some experts believe when people eat faster there's less time for the "I'm full" signal to reach the brain, increasing the risk of overeating.

The study was published online February 12 in the journal BMJ Open. The slow eaters tended to be healthier and to have a healthier lifestyle than either the fast or normal speed eaters.
