Ukraine deports ex-Georgian President Saakashvili to Poland

Supporters of Ukrainian opposition figure and Georgian former President Mikheil Saakashvili hold a rally in Kiev

Saakashvili noted however that he planned to fly to the Netherlands later on Wednesday.

"This person was on Ukrainian territory illegally and therefore, in compliance with all legal procedures, he was returned to the country from where he arrived", Ukrainian border service spokesman Oleh Slobodyan said.

He vowed to continue encouraging Ukrainians to stand up to authorities he considers "corrupt elites".

"I promise we'll organize mas protest movements and will push the aside peacefully", the Ukrainian TV channel Newsone quoted him.

Saakashvili said that he will not give up on his battle against President Petro Poroshenko's government despite being outside Ukraine, RFE/RL reported.

Hammerstein added that his client's stay in the Netherlands "has been arranged and approved" by the Dutch authorities.

On Monday, Saakashvili was detained in Kiev and expelled to Poland. The couple also has two sons.

Risk of Fatal Traffic Crashes Up After April 20 Cannabis Event
However, a new study shows that it's not only people that get high on that day, traffic fatality rates get high (er) as well. One thing is for sure - legalization allows safe alternatives to be promoted to those who need them most.

Saakashvili and a small crowd of supporters shoved their way through a line of guards from Poland into Ukraine in September.

Saakashvili called on the European Union and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in particular, to support him in his anticorruption campaign against Poroshenko, but has received little backing from Western leaders who have become wary of his increasingly erratic behaviour.

"But Saakashvili's personality - a flighty, unpredictable, psychologically unstable man - scares people away", she said.

The arrest could have a "negative impact" on Poroshenko's image overseas, said Sergiy Solodkyi, deputy director of the Kiev-based New Europe think-tank.

"We expect the rule of law as well as the rights of Saakashvili to be upheld", Commission spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said.

Saakashvili's wife, Sandra Elisabeth Roelofs-Saakashvili, was born in the Netherlands and has Dutch citizenship.
