Aim to eradicate tuberculosis from India by 2025: Prime Minister Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi set 2025 as the deadline for India to achieve complete elimination of Tuberculosis (TB) from the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the End Tuberculosis Summit at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi. The main aim of the summit is to review ongoing efforts and accelerate action toward the "End TB by 2025" goal.

"In India, TB has the maximum impact among communicable diseases".

PM Modi also underlined the work being done by the government to correctly identify TB victims, ensure that active cases are known on time, and whether the medicines that are being prescribed are effective. Steps have also been taken to see whether the TB under treatment is drug-resistant. "I have written to all chief ministers to join this mission", Modi said, adding it would boost the spirit of cooperative federalism.

PM Modi said, "We have not been successful in curbing Tuberculosis yet". In the last three years, the rate of immunisation against the disease has grown to 6% annually from 1% in 2014, he claimed. "Today I'm confident that in the duration of 1 year we'll be able to achieve 90% immunization".

"Even the most hard of things can be achieved, but for that we need to fix a target".

He further said that front-line TB physicians and workers can make a major contribution in this direction. He said, "The fact that several ministers from all states and concerned officers are present in the event here, indicate how we, as a Team India, are determined to eradicate TB from India".

Director General of WHO Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said WHO stands with India and other countries in the fight against Tuberculosis.

Leaders from across the globe have converged in the national capital for the summit, hosted by the Union Ministry of Health along with the WHO and the Stop TB Partnership.
