Cheo Hodari Coker Set to Scribe Spike Lee's Spidey Spinoff 'Nightwatch'

Spike Lee

Spike Lee may be getting into the superhero game. As part of their big announcement, the show also said that Cheo Hodari Coker, Luke Cage's showrunner, will write the script. Spike Lee was also believed to helm this project back in September when mentioned by the Meet the Movie Press podcast.

"(Spike Lee) is circling to direct a movie for Sony based on the Marvel character Nightwatch, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Likewise, the man Trench saw die isn't some random John Doe: it's an older version of himself, dressed in the Nightwatch costume. One is the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, the other is Silver & Black, which will focus on Marvel (anti) heroines Silver Sable and Black Cat, with Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Beyond the Lights) directing the latter.

Marvel Comics introduced the Nighwatch property in the 1990s, after the titular character made their printed page debut in 1993's Web of Spider-Man #97.

The Nightwatch comics revolve around Doctor Kevin Trench, who witnesses the death of a costumed man at the hands of a group of terrorists. Sony is now developing several films based within the Spider Man universe, including the Tom Hardy-headlined Venom which hits theaters this fall. Guilt-stricken, Trench exiled himself and the apparently indestructible battle-suit to a remote island.

Nightwatch

It's worth noting that the design of Nightwatch (see above image) is very similar to Spawn - a character that was created a year before, in 1992.

THR says Lee's involvement in the project is still in the early stages. It is rumored that the director will be in charge of Nightwatch.

Lee is the executive producer of the Netflix series "She's Gotta Have It".

Lee, the director behind Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, 25th Hour, Inside Man, and many more, is now filming the crime film Black Klansman, starring John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, and former Spider-Man franchise cast member Topher Grace.
