Giants to lure ex-Panthers RB Stewart to NY

Jonathan Stewart looks on before a game against

Free-agent running back Jonathan Stewart has signed with the New York Giants, the team announced Tuesday night. Add in the fact that Stewart is coming off a season in which he averaged 3.4 yards per carry with the Panthers and is clearly on the downslope of his career and, well, it certainly seems like Gettleman thinks his team isn't that far off from competing and that Stewart will help get them over the top. He became Carolina's all-time leading rusher in 2017 after surpassing DeAngelo William's previous record in October.

Stewart, who will turn 31 on March 21, will reunite with former Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula and general manager Dave Gettleman in NY.

"I am very pleased that we were able to make Jonathan a New York Football Giant", said Gettleman. He also caught eight passes for 46 yards.

The 5-10, 240-pound Stewart was a 2015 Pro Bowler. He was also impressive in 2009, which was his only season with more than 1,000 rushing yards as he posted 1,133 and 10 touchdown runs.

In his junior year at Oregon, Stewart rushed for 1,722 yards and nine touchdowns before he chose to jump to the NFL. Four weeks later, he rushed for 103 yards, including a season-long 60-yard touchdown, in a victory against eventual NFC finalist Minnesota. Unlike Stewart, he was a threat in the passing game with 34 receptions for 193 yards and a touchdown.

Stewart was the Panthers' first-round pick back in the 2008 NFL Draft and went 13th overall out of Oregon. He ended the year with just 90 rushing yards on 41 carries (2.2 yards per carry).
