Google Acquires Tenor, a Search Platform for GIFs

Google already offers direct access to GIFs via its Gboard mobile keyboard; the mention of Google Images hints that Tenor may be embedded into the image searching platform in a significant way.

Google Images director of engineering Cathy Edwards says Tenor can help create more effective searches in Google Images and in the tech giant's other products that utilize GIFs, like Gboard.

Google Images has seen a spate of updates in recent weeks, with the latest now being an acqusition of Tenor to improve its GIF capabilities. Tenor will continue to operate as a separate brand to better serve you, and I will continue to lead the Tenor team alongside my co-founders Erick Hachenburg and Frank Nawabi.

Ball-tampering row: Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull 'shocked and bitterly disappointed'
As a patriotic Australian I am, of course, a member of the Australian Cricket Family, which is why James was addressing me now. Smith has long prided himself in what he calls Australia's "hard, aggressive cricket" without crossing an indefinable "line".

The Google acquisition will help Tenor roll out more improvements for users, API partners, and advertisers, Tenor CEO David McIntosh said in a blog post. Most people now use Google Images to find more information about a topic, and to help them communicate and express themselves-case in point, we see millions of searches for GIFs every day. The company entered the scene more than three years ago with its GIF Keyboard, which it launched for iOS devices. Do you use them often?

Tenor claims a whopping 12 billion monthly searches are carried out each month by 300 million users, and it's this scale that Google is now looking to tap into. In 2017, Tenor processed searches using over 4 billion different search terms. The platform launched its first sponsored GIF late previous year and now works with many big brands. In fact, it even has a bit of an advertising business going on, as Dunkin Donuts won an award at the Mobile World Congress this year for the GIF campaign it was running on the Tenor platform.
