HBO Exec Hints at Everyone's Deaths in 'Game of Thrones' Season 8

Orsi said. "We can't obviously start with the budget of season 8 but would it be a "Game of Thrones" season three budget?"

But HBO executives have made one thing clear: they aren't playing it safe.

There's still at least a year to go before Game of Thrones' final season but that hasn't stopped viewers and the HBO show's production team spilling all the gory details.

"$50 million [per season] would never fly for what we are trying to do". Orsi said the network is planning to budget close to - if not just as much - on the spinoffs as the series now receives.

She added: "It feels like corporate malfeasance to not continue [Game of Thrones]". Carly Wray (The Leftovers), Brian Helgeland (Legend), Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass) and Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island) are all working on separate successor ideas, with author George R.R. Martin serving as an advisor on some of these.

This is the first time HBO has ever developed a spin-off.

Back in season one, before it became a record-breaking hit, the average episode of Game of Thrones cost $6 million.

HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi and programming president Casey Bloys got brutally honesty during an INTV panel in Jerusalem, Israel (via Deadline) in which they expressed some worry over the network's skyrocketing budget.

"None of the cast had received the scripts prior, and one by one they started to fall down to their deaths", she said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. By the end, the last few words on the final script, the tears just started falling down. But Orsi said HBO is still the preferred choice for prestige offerings when compared to Amazon, Netflix, and other new competitors.

In a wide-ranging discussion, Bloys also touched on competition with Netflix, noting that the streaming giant was "in the volume business", while HBO was "in the curation business".
