In Sacramento, Protesters Shut Down Freeway And Block Entrance To Kings Game

Protesters March, Shut Down Sacramento Freeway As Police Shooting Of Stephon Clark Draws National Headlines

Demonstrators rallied at the Tower Bridge at noon on Friday to continue protests regarding the shooting death of an unarmed black man, Stephon Clark, by Sacramento police on Sunday.

Around 3 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers prevented protesters from entering Interstate 5. Several CHP vehicles raced toward the scene, sirens blaring, in an apparent attempt to block protesters from the elevated roadway.

They swarmed a Folsom police SUV outside Devere's Irish Pub that appeared to be double parked on unrelated business.

According to CNN, officers then handcuffed Clark after he collapsed and began lifesaving efforts.

Protesters chanted, "Whose streets?"

"The officers were in full uniform and the suspect fled from them", she said. That is why protestors made a point of holding them up Friday.

After a pause to let some members of the crowd speak, the marchers moved down 24th Street for a mile in the direction of Meadowview Road. He was in his grandparents' backyard, holding a cellphone, and was shot at least 20 times by two officers.

Officers believed Clark had been breaking into cars in the neighborhood and shot him because they say they thought he had a gun. Some of the protesters reportedly cheered as the police drove away.

During the vigil, Diane Gomez exhorted young people to exercise their constitutional rights and urged police to be better trained.

"On Sunday, we had a horrific, horrific tragedy in our community", he said.

"Let the kids hoop", one marcher shouted, and the throng continued north on 7th. A pair of teens met up with friends, greeting each other with hand shakes and hugs.

"It gives them a sense that his death will mean something", Simmons said. She belongs to a Black Women United group. "When they leave the house at night, I want to know that they are safe". The police said deputies in the helicopter saw Clark break a neighbor's sliding glass door before jumping a fence.

"Whose streets? Our streets", the marchers chanted, blocking some of the busiest thoroughfares in downtown Sacramento.

Hundreds of protesters surrounded the Golden One Center in downtown Sacramento where the Kings and Atlanta Hawks were playing.

One marcher, Elijah Johnson, said he attended Sacramento High School and Capital Christian Center with Clark, and was incensed with media reports about Clark's troubled past.

"He (Clark) didn't make any threats against the police, there is no evidence he committed a crime, there was no warning from the police, there was no identification from the police", Crump said. "He was just trying to get home".

Other video from police body cameras shows two officers run after Clark with their flashlights and turn the corner of the house to face him in the backyard, yelling: "Show me your hands" and "gun" before they shoot him.

"We as a community. are in a constant state of grief", Johnson said.
