Indian Wells: Yuki Bhambri defeats Pouille, faces Querrey next

Yuki Bhambri beat Nicholas Mahut in a marathon effort that lasted nearly two hours and saw him come back from behind in both sets

(G.N.S) DT.12 India's Yuki Bhambri fought his way to a straight-set win over experienced Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in the men's singles first round at the BNP Paribas Open here. Bhambri registered his straight-sets win in all of 80 minutes.

In order to qualify for this tournament, he had to beat compatriot Ramkumar Ramanathan in the final round of the qualifying stages after first beating Dennis Novikov.

In the first set, Bhambri broke Pouille, a 2016 US Open and Wimbledon quarter-finalist, in the very first game and then broke him again to take a 4-1 lead.

The 25-year-old from New Delhi has been impressing at the highest level ever since he made a return from a tennis elbow injury as 474th-ranked player in January 2017.

Past year in August, Bhambri had shocked the tennis world by demolishing Citi Open defending champion and world number 22 Gael Monfils in August 2017.

Riding high on confidence, Bhambri will be looking to survive another day in Indian Wells. There was no respite for Pouille in the second set too. He had finished runner-up at Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (ATP 500) earlier this month.

Yuki Bhambri will now face ninth-seed Lucas Pouille in the second round.
